IMG_3831What do you get when you combine three of our favorite things — gourmet ice cream, award-winning Kinsman brandy, and a bar full of outgoing San Antonio locals — into one epic summer event? That’s right, the 4th Annual San Antonio Ice Cream Competition at Dorcol Distilling Co. has graced our city (and taste buds) once again! Yesterday, Dorcol opened its doors to eight hopeful bars and restaurants looking to have their delicious ice cream be crowned the best in San Antonio. Competing for the crown last night were chefs and bartenders from Barbaro, Botika, Creative Eats, Kimura, The Hoppy Monk, Liberty Bar, and the culinary teams from Rosella and Piatti. With tickets being only $10, you were able to drink and eat boozy ice cream to your heart’s content. Not only that, but all ticket proceeds went to supporting Contemporary Art Month (CAM), a local non-profit seeking to elevate the San Antonio contemporary art community to national heights.

The event kicked off at 7pm and ended at 10pm, but a full crowd has gathered even before the doors were open. As crowds of people piled in and the various creamy treats began to be sampled, it became immediately clear that no one had left their A-game at home. From the liquid nitrogen crafted ice cream from Rosella Coffee to the Kinsman infused gummy bears from Creative Eats, there was a full spectrum of deliciousness in the house. The Down Market team immediately got to sample each ice cream down the line, starting with Barbaro’s incredible caramel ice cream bars, and ending with Kimura’s powerful matcha and lemon peel dessert. With each sample, our buzz deepened and smiles widened, and by the end of the night, we were nice and warm for the amount of ice cream we had just consumed.

Once the sampling period began to wrap up, it was finally time for the final judgment: who had won? Co-owner Boyan Kalusevic opened the judging period with introductions to the panel: food writer Ron Bechtol, President & CEO of SA2020 Molly Cox, San Antonio Current’s Food & Nightlife Editor Jessica Elizarraras,  City of San Antonio District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, H-E-B Director of Insights and the First Lady of San Antonio Erika Prosper, and Executive Director of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference Cathy Siegel. One by one, the judges carefully taste-tested each dessert with expert (and delightful) scrutiny. And in the end, the crowned champion? The impossibly delicious peach cobbler from Liberty Bar! Not only that, but Liberty Bar cinched both the Judges Award AND the People’s Choice award, solidifying their throne as irrefutably the Best Ice Cream in San Antonio. We couldn’t have been happier, and with the event behind us, we cheerfully stumbled out of the bar, reliving the night and all the mouth-watering flavors we’d tasted. And if you ask our taste buds, everyone was a winner last night.
