South Crown Barbers

left Oak + Salt & Estate Coffee co. to finish up work at Alamo City Studios and plan out the rest of The Culture + Creative series but before we left owner Brian Labarbera told us about a Barbershop in SouthTown called, South Crown. While on lunch we decided to take a look at the barbershop and speak to the owner Derrick “Detail” Johnson about his establishment. Walking up to the shopping center which is below The 1010,  a street level retail/workspaces with ultra-modern residences above, we assumed with its over-sized balconies looming over us.

South Crown Barbers is located in the SoFLo Arts district only three blocks from the Blue Star Arts Complex, with Dorcol Distillery co. up the street, and right next to South Town Vinyl. We walked into stylish architectural space, of course there was the usual barber chairs and mirrors but right in front of us was a craft drinks bar (not completely ready to serve) and old school Pepsi coke machine, giving accents of something new and fresh, and something we have not seen before.

We spoke to Derrick as he gave us a tour of the dope vibes that was South Crown and his vision. South Crown is not just a barbershop reinforcing the classics of traditional haircuts (Side parts, Pompadours, slick backs, undercuts) and razor work (Hot towel shaves & razor fades), South Crown holds a nail & beauty salon with stylists and manicurists. Each section has its own specialist that helms their special craft but what’s great about the staff at South Crown, they are all independent professionals united to make South Crown grow into a one of a kind and unique experience. The Down Market squad, chilled with the staff for most of the day and South Crown is far from the ordinary or of any Corp. Brand Chain Barber Shop experience.

South Crown captures a modern take on a classic institution. Derrick’s passion, skill, and candidness got us hyped to film and learn about his journey in creating South Crown. This was probably the best time the Down Market crew and Sundown United squad had at a interview. The diversity, The modern col-lab of the staff, and the good time vibes made this a winner for us on what we love about the culture and creativity rising in San Antonio, downtown, and all of its surrounding areas. Thank you Derrick and the whole team of South Crown for being apart of Season 2 of The Culture + Creative series.

Season 2 of the Culture and Creative series by The Down Market and Sundown United is a continued effort to focus on and be a guide through the modern culture of the creative. The goal to showcase the creative wealth of collaboration, experience, and community in San Antonio, Texas and the surrounding areas of the Lone Star State.
